Quick Post - iCivics.org Games

It's that time of year. We have been felled by a bug, hence my lack of posts. Suffice it to say, my conversation has not been exactly sparkling with my wit and intelligence: you really wouldn't want to read my writing.

I do, however, want to mention a recent find. The boys have been having a blast playing the computers games at iCivics.org.

According to the website, "iCivics (formerly Our Courts) is a web-based education project designed to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in our democracy. iCivics is the vision of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is concerned that students are not getting the information and tools they need for civic participation, and that civics teachers need better materials and support."

As a political scientist and lawyer, I wholeheartedly share O'Connor's concerns, so I love the idea behind this website.

Game topics include: citizenship and participation, the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the separation of powers, the executive branch, the legislative branch and the judicial branch.

Bottomline: the boys are happy to spend their free time reviewing civics concepts through these games. Need I write more, really?

This looks fantastic! I've been looking for something to teach civics in a more organized way. Lately I've been just pulling a book or website out from time to time.

I found this game on the History Channel site that covers a bit of Civics, as well as history.
