A Geek is Born!

Okay, I really should have seen this coming. At two, Landry was found completely focused on quietly, diligently removing every screw from a computer with a power screw driver. At seven or eight, he scrounged up used parts in his dad's office to build his own computer from scratch. Recently, we have started sending him into friends' homes to set up and test out computers when Jerry can't get there. We'd readily let him do more because he's ready, but we are waiting for him to look a bit older.

So, really, the handwriting was on the wall.

Today, Landry wrote his first simple program using Python. Landry is over the moon. His father is so proud: "Today, my son, you are a geek."

To back up a bit, I should say that I've been trying to nudge Landry toward programming for some time by mentioning it whenever an opportunity arose. Repeatedly, however, Landry rejected programming outright, saying he was only interested in hardware.

That changed this past weekend when Landry began corresponding with Cybermama's JT. As Cybermama posted on Homegrown Minds, JT has recently begun learning Python with his dad. To make a long story slightly shorter, code was exchanged across the continent, and a new passion appears to have been kindled on the west coast. As we speak, a copy of Hello World! Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners is winging its way toward our home.

It is fantastic to see Landry so engaged, and I'm excited to sit back and see how this develops.
